a bit about Sam...
I have been a Midwife for over 20 years, and have been attending home births in the South West of WA for over 17 years. I currently work mainly in private practice, providing continuity of care for families wishing to birth at home or hospital. Originally from Perth, I have been living in Busselton for 21 years. I am lucky enough to be the mother to two amazing children - a daughter (18) and a son (15), both of whom were born at home in Busselton.
As a Midwife, I feel my role is to support the pregnant or birthing woman, or the new mother to the best of my ability. This support needs to encourage her to follow her instincts, trust her body and feel empowered to make the informed choices that are right for her and her family. I see myself as her ‘guardian’ in birth, to keep her and her baby safe from harm, but also to protect her space, her wishes and her confidence. I believe that women need to be given the opportunity to be truly involved and informed in their care and all of the decisions that are made along the way.
As every woman has different physical, emotional, spiritual, social and cultural needs and beliefs, a Midwife’s role is to respect and value this and adapt as these become known.
I believe continuity of care by a known midwife is the gold standard and should be a choice available to all women, irrelevant of their level of risk or type of birth.
I believe the journey through pregnancy, birth and into parenthood is the most profound and significant event in a woman’s life. A positive experience will be something that not only benefits her, but her baby, and family as she enters motherhood with confidence. I strongly believe that pregnancy and birth is a natural life event and I am a passionate supporter of natural childbirth, water birth and vaginal birth after caesarean. At the same time, I am able to acknowledge that this is not every woman’s wish. Nor, does every birth go perfectly to plan. Midwifery to me means truly being with that woman in whatever capacity she needs, and supporting her to achieve the best experience possible. It is an honour and a privilege to be involved at such an intensely personal time.
